Women in Bihar

One of the development parameter which is often considered for evaluating the well being of a state is the empowerment of Women in the society.

Although Bihar may figure at the bottom of other parameters but it has surely taken the top slot with regard to the empowerment of women.

DNA reports “After occupying 50 percent seats in the Village Panchayats, Block Development Committees and District Boards, the women of Bihar are now all set to fill around one lakh posts of teachers in the government-run primary and secondary schools. This follows the state government’s decision to reserve half of the vacant seats of teachers for them. In addition to this, the women have also been given age relaxation of maximum three years for these jobs.

Perhaps, Bihar is the only state to have given this kind of job reservation to women in government schools. The mass recruitment drive for around 2 lakh vacant posts began on Thursday. The Nitish Kumar-led NDA government’s decision to reserve 50 percent seats for women in the Panchayat bodies was an unprecedented step by any state government. Similar reservation would be provided to the women in the upcoming civic body elections too. The state cabinet has already approved the proposal.

Another development which we have seen in the past few years is the success of Bihari girls in various spheres of life. I have posted some other articles here, here , here , here and here which are just few indicators to the rising trend.

Ajit, while I applaud the Bihar government's intent to empower women, I do not agree that reservations for them in Panchayats/goverment offices/teaching professions is the ideal way to achieve it.

The ills associated with reservation based on any other parameter - caste or religion, for example - also hold true for gender, don't they? Bihar even had a woman in the highest chair of Chief Minister - but do we view that as a shining example of progress?

When the women of Bihar are educated and capable enough to be teachers/leaders or whatever else of their own accord - rather than on the dubious crutches of reservation - would I view that as true success of our state.
